We do not offer supportive letters for housing, benefits or to send to other third parties based on opinion. Whilst we appreciate that such problems can be very stressful; this is a matter for the relevant council, government department or agency, not for your GP.
What can you do?
If you require any information relating to your medical conditions, please request a copy of your medical records as a subject access request which is free of charge and can be emailed to you. Subject access requests can take up to 28 days to process. It may be longer, up to 56 days, in times of high demand.
- Please be aware you can also access your medical records via the NHS App. This would be the quickest way to view your records.
Housing Issues
Information for housing problems, based on health grounds, should be supplied by the individual using a form provided to them by the Council Housing Department. This should not require any input from the GP/practice.
If the council requires additional medical information, they can contact the surgery to request this, if you provide your written consent. There will be a charge for this, as this is not core NHS work.
The arrangements for seeking GP reports and for the payment required, can vary across local authority areas. However, if they are required, all requests should come via the Council or Housing Association and not the patient, with payment being made upfront.
The cost of any report will depend on the level of information required. We will only complete factual responses. We are not allowed to give an opinion. If in doubt we will refuse to complete the request and may issue a copy of medical records instead with your consent.
