Private Prescriptions & Ongoing Management: Obesity and Weight Loss Medications
GPs are not allowed to offer private prescriptions for NHS patients for medications associated with weight loss.
In addition, a recommendation from a private specialist for a medication available on the NHS does not entitle the patient to an NHS prescription for that medication.
Patients prescribed medications for managing being overweight and for obesity, should be offered appropriate wraparound care from the clinicians prescribing the medication for them. However, this level of care falls outside local service recommendations for primary care and is not available in primary care, with your GP, locally.
Patients choosing to consult a private specialist should expect that all recommended tests, procedures, and prescribed medications will be provided privately, rather than through the NHS.
